Biography

Relias was a central character in shaping the Kingdoms of Men in the Third Age, and much of the history surrounding him is muddied by rumor and slander.

122-149 AC: Early Life

Orphaned when thieves burned his clan's camp on the outskirts of New Pariden, Relias was raised by a caring scholar and devoted himself to learning.

Conflicting accounts say he was instead born to nobility within the walls of New Pariden as the third son of Lord and Lady Tice. Rather than a scholar, these accounts claim hew learned hand-to-hand combat from General Carrodus of Capitar and was only interested in sport, drink, and whoring. These accounts, which can be found in the Fallen Enchantress games, are propaganda created by New Pariden to slander Relias's character after he defected and founded Altar.

150-153 AC: Eastern Expedition

In 150 AC, Relias was tasked by the Queen of New Pariden to survey the Eastern Continent. During this expedition, Relias discovered that Kraxis had allied themselves with the Fallen. This knowledge cost Relias the life practically his entire crew and nearly cost his own. Only he and his companion Janusk survived the return home, shipwrecked south of Lake Zabril and washing ashore South of New Pariden.

Rumors much later claim that during this journey, Relias had awoken the Fallen Enchantress Ceresa and doomed his crew. Others claim he had sold his crew to Quendar slavers, or to a Kraxan channeler for use in dark experiences. While the first could be possible, the others are more blatant slander.

154 AC: Events of Elemental: War of Magic

After witnessing Kraxis's betrayal in the East and surviving the shipwreck that claimed his crew, he returned to warn the western kingdoms of the growing Fallen threat. When Relias did return from the East, and attempted to warn the Queen of the growing threat of the Fallen Empires he did find there, he was summarily dismissed by the Queen. He would then warn the other Kingdoms of Men in a campaign that culminated in the discovery and destruction of a Fallen encampment in the Central Wastes.

While Procipinee did not take Relias's warning seriously, the other Kingdoms of Men did, and this political cache allowed Relias to found a new Kingdom that accepted Men of all backgrounds, be they Amarian, Ironeer, Mancer, Tarthan, or even those of the Fallen races.

Those pushing the narrative that Relias as nothing but a pampered son of nobility claim he was he imprisoned for daring to publicly question the Queen's judgment and would be the poster boy of a revolt by the Pairan Nobility, and that was how Altar was founded. Again, this is propaganda used to paint Relias and by extent Altar as little more than power-hungry aristocracy.

155 AC: Events of Fallen Enchantress: Legendary Heroes

After establishing Altar as a fully-fledged city-state, Relias used the channeling abilities he had slowly cultivated since his journeys began to diminish the power of Oracle Ceresa, the Fallen Enchantress, by reconstituting the Forge of the Overlord. Ever the shrewd politician, Queen Procipinee used this event as a chance to weaken a foreign adversary by trapping Relias within the Forge of the Overlord.

155-161 AC: Imprisonment Within the Forge of the Overlord

In the half-decade that followed Relias's imprisonment by the Forge of the Overlord, Ceresa solidified her power in the East, once more threatening the sovereignty of the Kingdoms of Men. Unfortunately for Queen Procipinee, the Forge could not be used with Relias trapped within. The following year, Procipinee would try other means of curtailing the Fallen Enchantress's advance on the West, during which her daughter, Magesta, would converse with Relias from the outside.

Eventually, the Queen became desperate enough to free Relias, but doing so did not render the Forge operable, as unbeknownst to them, the Forge merely amplifies the powers of the channeler trapped within.

161-180 AC: Second Rule of Altar

Not much is known of this period, other than Relias ruled as Lord of Altar and led his country to equal and eventually exceed the power of Gilden and Capitar.

180-206 AC: The Confederacy of the Three Kingdoms

Relias is able to form a close alliance with Gilden and Capitar, culminating int the Confederacy of the Three Kingdoms. This Confederacy notably excludes New Pariden, as Queen Procipinee refused to see Altar as a legitimate and equal nation.

During this time, Ceresa would unite the East under her Empire of Sorcery, mirroring this consolidation of power in the West.

206-208 AC: War With the Empire of Sorcery

After Ceresa captured The Henge with hew armies and made preparations to march West towards Capitar, Procipinee still refused to submit to Relias's leadership in a coalition against Ceresa. This proves to be the last straw for Magesta, who defects to the Confederacy of the Three Kingdoms.

The Confederacy, with the aid of Magesta, were victorious in their battle West of The Henge, but the resulting deaths empowered Ceresa, since she is a powerful Channeler of Death magic.

Ultimately, Ceresa was vanquished by the young channeler Mirdoth, an agent of Procipinee, who used his orb to slay the Fallen Enchantress once and for all and absorb her Death magic in doing so. Mirdoth was hailed as a hero, and because Procipinee died around that time, Relias did not learn that he too was a target of Mirdoth's. Two years later, Mirdoth would leave for unknown lands.

208-449 AC: An Era of Peace

With Ceresa and Procipinee gone and the forces of the Fallen subdued, Altar saw over two centuries of peace and prosperity.

In 232, Relias would Marry Magesta, and a couple centuries later in 440 they would have a son, Galor.

449-455 AC: War Against the Sorcerer King

Unbeknownst to the inhabitants of Western Anthys, in the 239 years after he set off for parts unknown, Mirdoth had been learning the true power of the shards and gaining power. Eventually, he learned he could destroy the shards and absorb their power into himself rather than channeling magic through them. Over time, he gathered a legion of evil creatures and Fallen remnants and destroyed all but a handful of shards on Elemental. Mirdoth had crowned himself the Sorcerer King, and was not content to have anything less than complete domination over the very reality of Elemental.

Relias and his wife Magesta, the last of the Channelers (save for their 15-year-old son) faced off against the Mirdoth after he had finished off the rest of their kind. Both fell to the Sorcerer King. It would take their son, Galor, to finally put an end to the Sorcerer King's reign of terror.

Legacy

Millenia after Relias's death, his Kingdom of Altar would continue to prosper, eventually becoming the namesake of their planet and their people. These would be Altaria and the Altarians, respectively.
